Novosibirsk. River view.

Novosibirsk lies along the Ob River in the West Siberian Plain. Its time difference with Moscow is three hours. It’s the administrative center of the region. 1.4 million people live and work in Novosibirsk. It’s over 70% of the population of the region. It is the 4th largest city of Russia. Most of the smaller towns lie along the railways. The Trans-Siberian Railroad crosses the region from west to east. Today’s Novosibirsk has got the largest industrial complex in Siberia. The town is the youngest of the Russian metropolitan cities. Due to its well-chosen location Novosibirsk became the region’s center of administration, finance and culture within only hundred years.

The territory of the region covers two large areas. The biggest is the West Siberian Plain. To the south is the Ukok Plateau. It is the part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site entitled Golden Mountains of Altai. Novosibirsk lies at the banks of the Ob, which is the largest river in Siberia. The landscape has numerous small lakes (more than 3 000). Not far away from the town a dam with a hydroelectric power plant was built in 1956. It has provided the region with its largest artificial lake fittingly called “Ob Sea”.

The climate of Novosibirsk is continental. Big temperature swings are not unusual. In winter the temperature can drop under −40° Celsius, in summer it can get up to +40° C.

Novosibirsk is well known for its academic institutions and universities. In Akademgorodok, a nearby town of academicians, you will find more than 15 universities, 43 institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and over 100 other research institutions of nearly all research branches. Novosibirsk is the biggest cultural center of Siberia. There are several theatres, with the State Theatre being the largest in the world. There are also a philharmonic concert hall, a conservatoire, many museums and zoos. A lot of festivals and exhibitions take place every year.
