The view to the bay of Golden Horn

“Vladivostok” literally means “The Ruler of the East”. It is built on the hills around the “The Golden Horn” bay. With the population of over 600 000 inhabitants the town today is the most important port of Russia at the East. It is the capital of the Primorsky Krai region. Because of its close proximity to the Chinese border and the ferry links to Japan, economically Vladivostok is very important. The town is an important eastern stop on the route of the Trans Sib. Express. Vladivostok was the main base of the Soviet Pacific Fleet and therefore was closed to the regular foreign tourists. At 1991 this policy was relaxed and foreign visitors no longer require a special permit to enter city’s boundaries. However, Vladivostok is still the base for several civil shipping companies as well as the far-east Russian Fleet.

In 1852, the outpost of Vladivostok officially became a port. With the purpose to encourage foreign trade, a Free Trade Port Status was granted to Vladivostok. Nadezhda Gorelka was the first child born in Vladivostok (27.9.1863). In 1871 the town became the most important Russian port at the Pacific Ocean and therefore developed very quickly. Administrative buildings were constructed and large commercial companies and factories were established.
