Kazan. Panoramic view of the city

Kazan es la capital de la República de Tatarstán y está situado en el centro de Rusia, en la llanura europea oriental. Fue construida en la confluencia de los dos grandes ríos el Kama y Volga, a unos 797 kilometros de distancia desde Moscú hacia el este. La ciudad de Kazan ha sido fundada por búlgaros del Volga en el año de 1005. Hasta mediados del siglo XVI fue la capital del Kazan Khanate. En el año 1552 Iván el Terrible conquistó Kazan y añadido este a los estados rusos.

Hoy Kazan tiene aproximadamente 1 200 000 habitantes, de los cuales el 40% son rusos y el 40% son tártaros, además con un 20% de otras nacionalidades. Tatarstán es una sociedad multinacional, es considerado un puente entre Europa y Asia y entre las diferentes religiones y culturas. Los dos grupos religiosos más importantes son la Iglesia rusa ortodoxa (39 %) y el Islam (52%), los cuales viven juntos en armonía. Además hay católicos, protestantes, Judios, Hare Krishnas y los seguidores de la religión Bahai.

El pueblo es muy pintoresco y ofrece muchos edificios históricos bien, minaretes e iglesias. El Kremlin de Kazán es una de las más bellos kremlins de Rusia. Uno puede sentir la historia de los siglos antiguos en la mayor parte del interior de la ciudad. Debido a sus influencias históricas y religiosas Kazan representa un tesoro cultural único.

Además de la gran riqueza histórica, Kazan es el centro regional, político, científico y cultural de la Rusia de hoy. Desde 2005, la ciudad tiene un Metro. Este tiene 18 km de largo, y ahora tiene 14 paradas. La Universidad de Kazán fue fundada en 1804 y es una de las universidades más antiguas de Rusia. Particularmente los lugares turísticos más dignos de apreciar son el Kremlin (final del siglo XVI), la mezquita Kul Sharif, la Catedral de Pedro y de Pablo, y el antiguo Ayuntamiento.
