The sightseeing begins with the Kremlin, at the heart of the town. There you will visit the famous St. Sophia Cathedral of the 11-^th century with its miracle making icon. Cross the Volkhov by a footbridge and you will get to the right bank of the river and find yourself on the grounds of Yaroslav's Court and the old Marketplace. Here you will take a trip into medieval ages and be introduced to the architectural monuments of the 12^th -18^th cc.

The museum is located in the ancient, secluded administrative buildings in the center of the Kremlin. In 14 halls of the museum you will see a truly astounding and exquisite collection of impressively large icons of 11^th-18^th cc, probably the finest in Russia. This collection alone is worth the trip! You will be also introduced to the unique archeological finds including world famous birch-bark scrolls, written by ancient Novgorodians. This one hour tour is available on its own, but also serves as an excellent extension to the sightseeing tour and visit to the Kremlin.

The excursion is half an hour long. Decorative and applied arts of the 11^th-19^th cc. display the jewelry artifacts of Novgorodian artisans and craftsmen. They merge exquisite simplicity with superb craftsmanship. Many of these are priceless! The exposition is displayed in the Kremlin and is available as a single excursion on its own, but also serves as an excellent extension to the sightseeing tour and visit to the Kremlin.

Yuryevo is a beautiful suburb of Novgorod situated on the Lake Ilmen. You will visit the oldest functioning Russian monastery with St. George Cathedral of the 12^th century, famous for its unique acoustics. You will learn about the history of monasticism as well as the monasteries' role in life of a medieval Russian town.

Only a stone's throw away from the Yuryiev Monastery is the Museum of Wooden Architecture. Go for a stroll in a shady wood, through a large area full of wooden buildings collected from all over Russia and presented here as a delightful exhibition: a reconstructed village of traditional dwellings, log churches... a fascinating walk, but above all a voyage in time not to be missed.
