CITY WALKING TOUR 2

CITY WALKING TOUR Moscow

This walking guided city tour shows you around the city center of Moscow. During this excursion you’ll get a good account of the history, architecture and main landmarks of the city. There will be some stops for photographing.

The tour starts at Tverskaya Street—one of the main and the most exciting of all streets in Moscow. It leads to the heart of the city—the Kremlin and Red Square.

You will see the Red Square with the History Museum, the Trading Arcades of GUM (one of the biggest shopping malls in Russia), Lenin’s Mausoleum and, of course, the symbol of Moscow—St. Basil’s cathedral.

Then you will walk along the Kremlin’s Embankments up to the Temple of the Christ the Saviour that is a symbol of Russia’s spiritual revival.

Then you will take a stroll to The Old Arbat Street—a picturesque pedestrian street where you can stop to watch one of the many street entertainers and buy souvenirs.

And after that you will walk towards the Alexander Garden where you will have the opportunity to relax and watch the change of guards at the Tomb of Unknown Soldier.

additional excursion to ST. BASIL’S CATHEDRAL

St. Basil’s Cathedral

In addition to a standard guided city tour of Moscow you will visit the St. Basil’s Cathedral located on the Red Square. The cathedral was named after Holy Fool Basil the Blessed who was canonised after his death.

This cathedral was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible to celebrate his capture of the Tatar stronghold of Kazan in 1552. Despite its apparent disorder, there is an underlying symmetry to the cathedral, which has eight domed chapels symbolizing the eight assaults on Kazan, clustered around a central, lofty tent-roofed spire. The ninth chapel (that is on the northeastern side) was added by the Tsar Fyodor in 1588 to house the remains of St. Basil.

In this wonderful cathedral you can see 9 icon-stands containing about 400 icons of the 16th—19th centuries and its remarkable walls decorated with oil paintings and frescoes.

Strategic location to the southeast of Moscow also defines the Convent as an important fortress. The museum of the Convent has a big collection of Russian icons, jewelry, embroidery and books. Many Russian celebrities were buried in the necropolis of the Convent.
